"I draw Stas on the table," noted Wyspianski in his calendar on December 6, 1904. The titular character is Wyspianski's son, who was only 3 years old during the portrait session.
Wyspianski, who had an allergy to oil paints, found everything he needed for his art in pastels. The artist could complete a work in as little as an hour. This skill was particularly significant, especially in the context of creating portraits of children. Wyspianski often managed to capture their moments of astonishment.
In the pastel portraits of his children, we find the characteristic features of his style - soft lines, distinct contours, and Art Nouveau floral embellishments. These linear-flat compositions are full of symbolism and meaning, captivating with their color and innovative execution.
