Afterimages briefly appear in our eyes when, after looking at an object, we avert our eyes. We see a blurred shape in complementary color. They became inspiration for Strzemiński's avant-garde works, who painted a series of pictures capturing the optical impression caused by looking at the sun. The most famous one is 'Afterimage of Light. Woman in a Window'.
It is characterized by a thick texture and short, multicolored brushstrokes. Upon closer inspection, one can discern the outline of blue eyes and red lips. The painting consists of irregular patches, multicolored wavy lines, both convex and concave. Some of the lines lack a clear beginning or end.
In 2016, Bogusław Linda portrayed Strzemiński in the film "Afterimage." This was Andrzej Wajda's final work.
